How the Haridasas saw Rayaru-2

This is the second in the series on how Haridasas saw Rayaru. This deals with Krishna Avadootaru, a high ranking official of the court of Ghorpades of Sondur in Bellary district.

Krishna Avadoota is one of the lesser known devotees of  Raghavendra Swamy.

Krishna Avadootaru (1836-1909) was believed to be an amsha of Nachiketa and he along with Appanacharya and Ibharampura Appa were the three great disciple of Raghavendra Swamy. All the three were belived to have been associated with Prahalada.

Nachiketa was the boy who went to Yama loka and managed to obtain three boons from Yama himself. This incident is contained in the katha Upanishad.

Krishna Avadhootaru was born as Muddu Krishnacharya in an orthodox Madhwa family in a small village of Narayanadevanakere in Hospet taluk of Bellary district of Karnataka.

This village is now a part of history as it has been completely submerged by the backwaters of the Tungbhadra dam.

As his parents Venkataramanachar and Triveni were poor, they allowed him to be adopted by Halekoti Bheemasenacharya and Venkamma. He was just three months old.

As a child, Muddu Krishnacharya had an excellent grasp and he was a master of several subjects. He spent the first 32 year of his life in persuit of  pleasure of life and also took to other streams of philosophy such as Adwaitha and Vishastadwaitha.

He went to Kerala where he gained mastery over Vamacharya. He became a devotee of Raghavendra Swamy after Appanacharya came in his dream and gave a beautiful upadesha of Sri Krishna.

He is the author of Raghavendra Tantra, the work which Raghavendra Swamy himself ordered to be written.

Krishna Avadootaru himself has written about how he came to write the Tantra. He says Rayaru appeared in his dreams and gave him a copper plate with Sanskrit alphabets. He then asked Avadootaru to let people know the correct and proper manner of worshipping him so that he can bless them.

The Tantra thus is a work detailing how we can gratify Rayaru and how we can get his blessings and the correct manner in which to pray to the seer of Mantralaya.

The Tantra has 15 chapters and Avadootaru starts the work by telling us how he spent the early years of his life in earthly pleasures and how Appanacharya came twice to wake him up from his indolence.

The Tantra is a beautiful work in Sanskrit. There are 51 alphabets  or aksharas in Sanskrit and they start from a’ and end with ‘ksha’. Therefore, the alphabet system in Sanskrit is also called as akshara. The Tantra is a unique book containing 52 verses. The first letter of the first line of each of the 52 verses comes from the Sanskrit alphabet.

The last verse is the Phala stuti or colophon. Since Sanskrit alphabets are called Akshara, the Tantra is also known as Akshara-mala stuti or a composition which was composed by assembling alphabets of Sanskrit.

Each of the 52 verses comprises of  two lines with 22 characters

each. In Sanskrit such a meter is called Akruti.

What is different about this composition is that Krishna Avadootaru tells us how we can please Raghavendra Swamy and how we can pray to him in the correct and proper manner. This is the secret that Raghavendra swamy wanted to share with us and for this he choose Avadootaru.

This composition has many tales about Rayaru and his amsha. It is here that Avadootaru tells us that Vibheeshana too was an amsha of Prahalada. He also gives us other lesser known insights of Rayaru.

This is how the beautiful composition goes:
