Ramapathi Vittala Dasa on Rayaru

There are hundreds of Dasas after Vijaya Dasa who have written songs on Raghavendra Swamy or Rayaru (1595-1671).

Raghavendra Swamy was responsible for leading the second revival of the Dasa Sahitya after he entered Brindavana. Appanacharya, his favourite disciple and a resident Zamindar of Bichale, was the first to compose a stotra on Rayaru.

The Purnabhoda Stotra was sung by Appanacharya even as he swam across the turbulent Tungabhadra on August 8, 1671 when he heard that Raghavendra Swamy was entering Brindavana in Mantralaya.

After him, several Haridasas composed songs on Raghavendra including Vijaya Dasa, Gopala Dasa, Pranesh Dasa, Jagannatha Dasa of Manvi, Kuntoji Dasa or Narasimha Dasa, Guru Jagannatha Dasa, Ananda Dasa and several hundred others.

All these dasas wrote under their own ankita and almost all of them wrote on Raghavendra Swamy.

One such Dasa is Ramapathi Dasa. He has written several compositions on Raghavendra Swamy. Here are a few of his songs. He was earlier known as Naregalla Ramadasa. He was the son of Shrida Vittala Dasa’s sister. He obtained his ankitha from Karjagi Theerthapada Vittala Dasa.

HE wrote under the ankita  Ramapathi Vittala

The avatars of Jagannatha Dasa

One of the outstanding Haridasas of all times is Jagannatha Dasa of Manvi.

Jagannatha Dasa was a renowned devotee of Raghavendra Swamy of Mantralaya and he not only visited Mantralaya where the Brindavana of  Rayaru is situated several times, but also spent time at Bichale and Gandhal.

Jagannatha Dasa has composed several songs on Rayaru and many of them are highly popular. He wrote under the ankita Jagannatha Vitala.

Popular belief has it that Jaganatha Dasa was first born as Sahalada, the brother of  Prahalada. Afterwards, he takes on the role of King Shalya even as Prahalada becomes Bahlika Raja.

Both Prahalada and Sahalada were sons of the demon King, Hiranyakashipu and Kayadu. Both were followers of Hari.

After Hiranyakashipu is killed, Prahalada takes birth as Bahlika Raja and he fights the Kurukshetra war on the side of the Kauravas and against the Pandavas.

Bheeshma, the supreme commander of the Kauravas, had commanded Balika Raja to join him. Therefore, the Raja along with his son Somadatta and grandson Bhurisravas, had participated in the Mahabharata war with one Akshauhini (division) army of   soldiers.

Bahlika and his grandson Bhurisravas were amongst the eleven distinguished Generals or Senapatis of the Kaurava army appointed by Duryodhana.

When Prahalada was born as Bahlika Raja, his brother Sahalada was born as King Shalya.

Shalya too participated in the Kurukshetra war and he too sided with the Kauravas against the Pandavas.

Shalya was the brother of  Madri who was the mother of the Pandavas, Nakula and Sahadeva. He was also the ruler of the kingdom of Madra.

A skilled archer and mace fighter, he is tricked by Duryodhana into supporting him. On the 16th and 17th day of the Kurukshetra war, Shalya served as Karna’s charioteer during the latter’s heroic battles with Arjuna.

After Karna’s death, Shalya takes over as the commander of the Kaurava forces, rallying them from retreat. He becomes the commander-in-chief on the last day of the war. He is killed after a fierce spear fight with Yudhistera, the eldest of the Pandavas, while Bahlika Raja-the brother of Shantanu, who also commanded the Kaurava army, was earlier slain in a mace fight with Bheema.

Thus we see that Prahalada-Sahalada were reborn as Balika Raja and Shalya respectively and both were on the same side during the Kurukshetra war and both were killed by the Pandavas and both were commanders.

The next avatar of Balika Raja is in the Kaliytuga as Vyasa Theertha or Vyasa Raja (1447-1539) and during this period, Shalya is first reborn as a disciple of Vadiraja Theertha (1480-1600) and then as a son of Purandara Dasa. Interestingly, both Vadiraja Theertha and Purandara are disciples of Vyasa Raja.

When Raghavendra Swamy (1595-1671) strides across the world, the avatar of Sahalada does not come about. It takes more than 50 years after Rayaru enters Brindavana in Mantralaya for the Sahalada avatar to take birth as Jagannatha Dasa of Manvi (1728-1809).

Thus if we see that Shanku Karna has taken the form of Prahalada, Balika Raja, Vyasa Theertha and Raghavendra Swamy, his brother Sahalada is Shalya, disciple of Vadiraja Theertha, son of Purandara Dasa and finally Jagannatha Dasa.

It is only during the Raghavendra Swamy avatar, that Sahalada does not meet his brother. But there is a school of thought that says Appanacharya too had an amsha of Sahalada.

So we find that Jagannatha Dasa was always close to Rayaru in all his avatars.

Jagannatha Dasa’s avatars as Sahalada,  Shalya, disciple of Variraja Thertha and son of  Purandara Dasa is beautifully narrated by his disciple Pranesha Dasa (1736-1822) in his song,

“Hiranyakashipu jasalhada neve eradane janmadi shalyanaada guruvadirajaralli archisida puranadaradasaraayaralli udasida.”

Incidentally, Pranesha Dasa was an incarnation of Pandu Maharaj, the father of the Pandavas.

Hastodaka to Rayaru

One of the most important Haridasas is Vijaya dasa (1682-1755), who was an amsha of Brighu Rishi and in his earlier avatar was the son of Purandara Dasa called Madhwapathi Dasa.

Vijaya Dasa was a devotee of Raghavendra Swamy. Since Vijaya Dasa stayed at Adoni first and at Chikalparvi next, he could visit Mantralaya frequently.

He is among the first Haridasas to describe Raghavendra Swamy comprehensively and also tell us about several hidden facts of the seer of Mantralaya.

Vijaya Dasa not only saw Raghavendra Swamy sitting in the Brindavana in Padmasana, but he also described the seer in the company of several Gods.

Whenever Vijaya Dasa visited Mantralaya, the priests there who were aware of the devotion of the Dasa to Rayaru, allowed him to offer Naivedya to the Brindavana.

On one of his visits to Mantralaya, Vijaya Dasa came to the Brindavana along with a few disciples. One of them was reverentially holding the plate containing the Hastodaka. The plate was covered with a plantain leaf. The time then was sometime around 12 noon, and Vijaya Dasa was praying to Raghavendra Swamy.

Vijaya Dasa was reciting slokas in praise of Rayaru and almost 45 minutes elapsed before he offered Hastodaka to Rayaru. The disciple holding the plate then asked Vijaya Dasa why he taken so long on this occasion to offer Hastodaka.

Vijaya Dasa said when he entered the place where the Brindavana was located, he saw Rayaru getting up and go out of the Brindavana. He said he saw Rayaru taking bath in the Tungabhadra and then go to Bichale where he visited the Japada Katte.

Rayaru then came to Gandhal where he had meditated and got the darshana of Pancha Mukhi Anjaneya. Rayaru mediated for a long time today in Gandhal at the PanchamukhiAnjaneyaTemple and, therefore, he took some time coming back to the Brindavana in Mantralaya.

Vijaya Dasa then told the disciple that he had waited in front of the Brindavana to offer Hastodaka only after Rayaru returned from his daily routine. The disciple appeared shocked and overwhelmed at how Vijaya Dasa had managed to see Rayaru in the Brindavana and how he had come to know of the routine.

What this means is the importance that Hastodaka hold for us. If and when we visit Mantralaya and other holy places, partake the food there as it is sanctified by the gods themselves. Never refuse to have food at the holy places.

Even at home, offering Naidevya and/or Hastodaka to God would be a good practice. There are several slokas and mantras that tell us about the importance of  first offering to God and then taking it as prasada.

Another great sage, who regularly followed this practice was Vadiraja Theertha (1480-1600) of Sode. This seer used to keep a bowl of Hayagreeva on his shoulders and the Lord would come in the guise of a horse and partake it.

Raghuttama Theertha of  Uttaradi Matha, whose Brindavana is near Tirukoilur in Tamil Nadu, offered Naivedya to the Gods and they came every day in person to partake it.

Purandara Dasa’s son, Madhwapathi Dasa, regularly fed Yantrodharaka Hanuman at Chakratheerta in Hampi and this was witnessed by none other than Purandara Dasa himself. Similarly, Jitamitra Theertha of  Raghavendra Swamy Matha and the successor of Vibhudendre Theertha regularly offered Naivedya to the Narasimha Saligrama which opened its mouth wide to eat it.

The archaka who became a Haridasa

Gokavi Anantadreesharu or Gokavi Anantacharyaru (1670-1750) is an erudite Haridasa who has written several scholarly works and composed many devaranamas.

He was working as a archaka or chief priest in Venkatesha temple. He was a disciple of Adavi Jayatheerthacharyaru or Adavi Acharyaru who was also known as Madanoor Vishnu Teertha (1756-1806). When Adavi Acharyaru stayed at Munnoli on the banks of the Malaprabha, Anatacharyaru sought his blessings.

Vishnu Theertha entered Brindavana at Madanoor, about 9 kilometres from Koppal.

Anantadreesharu spent the later part of the life in Kadakol near Ramdurg taluk.

Some of his major works include Tulaja Mahatme, Venkatesha Paarijata, Pralada Charitre, Srikrishna charitre, Dhruva Charitre, Shiva Parijata, Pharaakugalu, Kannada Pancharatna and several other deveranamas.

The Venkatesha Parijata is a work in ten chapters. It is regarded as his magnum opus. This is believed to be an authentic record of Lord Venkateshwara.  He was ordained by Lord Srinivasa himself to record the Srinivasa kalayana Mahotsava.

He wrote under the pen name or ankita of Ananthadreesha, which  was given to him by Lor Venkatesha himself in a dream.

He was a devotee of Raghavendra Swamy and here are some of his compositions.

The lyrics in Kannada of “ಭೋ ಯತಿ ವರದೇಂದ್ರ – ಶ್ರೀ ಗುರುರಾಯ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರ” are as follows:

ಭೋ ಯತಿ ವರದೇಂದ್ರ – ಶ್ರೀಗುರುರಾಯ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರ        || ಪ ||
