The passing away of a scholar

He ascended the holy peetha of the Mantralaya matha after a long and distinguished academic career. He joined a Vidyapeetha in Bangalore first as a teacher and then went on to become its principal.

After his retirement as a Principal, he decided to dedicate his life to the service of Raghavendra Swamy or Rayaru. Impressed by his devotion to Rayaru and his dedication to the cause of Madhwa philosophy, Sushemendra Theertha, the then pontiff of the Mantralaya Matha (Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mantralaya Matha) chose him as his successor. He then came to be known as Suyatheerdra Theertha.

Suyatheendra Theertha ascended the Mantralaya Matha peetha after Sushemendra Theerthe entered Brindavana in Mantralaya in 2009. Suyatheendra Theertha entered Brindavana just a few days ago at Mantralaya and he was laid to rest next to the Brindavana of his ashrama Gurugalu, Sushemendr Theertha.

He was born as Susheelendracharya in Pete Alur in Mundargi taluk of Gadag district. His parents were Ananthacharya and Yamunabai of Gouthama Gothra and they belonged to the ‘Beegamudre’ family which is the poorvashrama lineage of  Raghavendra Swamy himself.

Susheelendracharya completed his primary education at Pete Alur and high school at Mundargi. He did his BSc from Karnatak university, Dharwad. He came to Bangalore and completed B.Ed. He also completed AMIE which is equivalent to Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.

Susheelendracharya studied Sahitya and Veda under Suyameendra Theertha and Nyaya Sudha and other Shastras by Ramacharya, a scholar at the Mantralaya Mutt.

He then joined Bharatheeya Samskruthi Vidyapeetha of Bangalore as a teacher for thirty years after which he was elevated as its principal.  He served as the  principal for sic years.

After his retirement, Susheelendracharya was appointed by Sushameendra Theertha, the pontiff of the Mantralaya Matha, as the Dharmadhikari at the Seethapathi Agrahara branch of the Mutha in Bangalore. Subsequently, he became the Dewan of the Mantralaya Matha.

On 4-7-2006, Susheelendracharya was appointed as the junior seer of the Mantralaya Matha. He was renamed as Suyatheendra Theertha.

On March 21, the Suyatheendra Theertha passed away just after midnight. He had earlier on the day participated in matha rituals and pooje. He entered Brindavana in Mantralaya itself.

More responsibility to seer

Just days after the celebration of the birthday of Raghavendra Swamy or Rayaru as he is affectionately called, the Mantralaya Raghavendra Swamy Matha witnessed a change of guard, albeit in a smooth manner.

The Mantralaya Matha said “the administrative responsibilities and rights pertaining to the Matha branches, Kalyana Mantapas, Vidyapeetas and educational institutions of Jagadguru Sriman Madhvacharya Moola Maha Samsthana Shri Raghavendra Swami Matha Mantralaya has been formally conferred by the current Peetadhipathi His Holiness 108 Shri Suyateendra Theertha Shripaadangalavaru upon his successor His Holiness Shri Subhudendra Theertha Shripaadangalavaru on 10.03.2014”.

It said Sri Swamiji (Suyateendra Theertha) has taken this decision to make himself enabled to involve into further Japa and Tapa”.

Following the event, “S.N. Suyameendra Acharya the Additional Aptakaryadarshi of Sri Ubhaya Sripadangalavaru, made an appeal to all the disciples of Shri Matha, devotees of Shri Gururajaru and well wishers of Shri Matha to hereby extend the same amount of reverence and cooperation hitherto showered upon the senior Shripaadangalavaru, now upon his successor for the prosperity and well being of Shri Matha”.

What this communication from the matha means is that the junior swamy or Subhudendra Theertha would now take up more responsibilities of the matha and run its vast network.

It was in May 2013 that Suyateendra Teertha Swamy had declared the then mutt’s Dewan, Raja S Pavamanachar, as his successor. After he took deeksha, Pavamanachar was given the name Sri Subhudheendra Teertha.

The Sanyasa deeksha to Pavamanachar was given at the Sannidhi of Dheerendra Teertha (1785-?), one of the most illustrious pontiffs of the Mantralaya Matha, at Hosaritti in Haveri district.

Coming back to Suyateendra Theertha, he took over as the senior pontiff of the matha in April 2009 after the demise of the then reigning peethadhipati of the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Matha,  Sushameendra Theertha (1985-2009).

Suyateendra Theertha is the fifth son of Ananthacharya and Yamunabai of Alur in Mundargi taluk of Gadag district. A science graduate with a B.Ed and AMIE, he served as principal of the Bharatiya Samskrit Vidya Peetha, Bangalore, for 32 years.
